WATO! Hosts A Dynamic Mock Trial

The Moot Court experience on Wednesday January 12 and Thursday, January 13  was phenomenal!  Attorneys, law students, law professors, paralegals and judges made major contributions to the lives of the 23 girls that attended the two-day session.
The moot court, or mock trial,  as it is sometimes called, was a make-believe court case in which the girls argued a fictional legal matter.  The case was of a young woman (plaintiff) who sued a young man (defendant) as a result of contracting HIV from him.

Through the moot court event, the girls were given the opportunity to learn about several aspects of the country’s civil legal process – including its limitations.

The legal professionals brought out the best in the girls and the girls now have role models, confidants and mentors.  It was a wonderful thing to see and experience the
power of Black women who shared their time and talents.

“This was one of the best trainings we’ve been a part of  since I’ve been here”    Rochelle, 14 year old WATO participant

Great News

The United Way of the National Capital Area provided second-year funding for the reading, writing, and speaking component of the Afterschool Program for Girls. The grant allows us to continue skill-improvement to girls ages 13-16.  Specialists in each of the components will work with the girl’s one-hour a day, three days a week.    Last year, ten girls improved their grades by at least one level (from C- to B).  Eight girls improved by two (C- to B+).  Join us in congratulating the hard work of all the girls.
